The Stop Exercise

Begin by saying,

“Let’s come to a complete stop,”

and then wait until all the students look at you. Read the following sample script or something similar of your own design:

“If you are comfortable with closing your eyes, good, allow your eyes to rest. If you prefer, you may look down at the table or your hands. Just sit up straight with your head held high. Feel balanced, still, and at ease. Feel the weight of your body in the chair, your feet on the floor, and the play of air on your face and hands.

“Now, remain quite still, and don’t make any sounds. Let your listening run out to include all the sounds already in this room, all the sounds in the hall, and all the sounds in the building. Try to hear the tiniest, most delicate sound as far away as you can

“Take a deep breath, filling up your diaphragm. It will feel like your stomach is rising. Hold until the count of three… 1, 2, and 3. Good. Again, hold until the count of three… 1, 2, and 3 slowly release.

Just rest in this wide open attention for one minute.
